China’s First 145 kV Blue SF₆-Free Vacuum Circuit Breaker Successfully Commissioned
A significant milestone in environmentally friendly power transmission technology has been achieved with the successful commissioning of Siemens Energy’s 145 kV Blue vacuum circuit breaker at Lucun Substation in Henan Province, China.
The project marks the first deployment of the 145 kV Blue vacuum circuit breaker in China’s power industry and also represents its first application in the Asia-Pacific region.
As utilities worldwide continue to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electrical infrastructure, the adoption of SF₆-free switchgear solutions is accelerating across transmission and distribution networks.
SF₆-Free Technology for a Sustainable Grid

Traditional high-voltage switchgear commonly relies on SF₆ gas for insulation and arc-quenching performance. While technically effective, SF₆ is recognized as one of the most potent greenhouse gases used in the power industry.
The Siemens Energy Blue circuit breaker replaces SF₆ with clean air insulation and vacuum interruption technology, eliminating the need for fluorinated greenhouse gases while maintaining reliable switching performance.
This approach helps utilities reduce environmental impact and supports long-term carbon reduction goals.
Supporting Renewable Energy Integration
Lucun Substation plays an important role in supplying electricity to local communities and agricultural operations while serving as a connection point for photovoltaic power generation.
The deployment of environmentally friendly switchgear contributes to the development of cleaner and more sustainable power networks capable of supporting increasing renewable energy penetration.
Growing Demand for Alternative Gas Monitoring Technologies
As SF₆-free and alternative gas-insulated equipment becomes more widely adopted, utilities face new requirements for equipment commissioning, gas quality verification and long-term maintenance.
Key testing requirements may include:
- Mixed gas ratio analysis
- Trace oxygen monitoring
- Dew point measurement
- Leak detection
- Gas quality assessment
- Gas recovery and handling
Accurate measurement and maintenance technologies remain essential for ensuring the safety and reliability of next-generation environmentally friendly switchgear.
